Roport to iul General at Shanghai on the

question of payment of duty in Shanghai on shares

of the Shanghai Gas Company Limited.

I have had the advantage of roidines copy of n Letter

addressed by Kesare. King, Wire & Company to Seeretary

Sir Edward Grey.

In that Letter coilま行 1枚 with

regard to the refusal of the Shanghai Gas Co., Ltd. (act-

ing on the advice of their solicitors) to recognise a

Hongkong grant of Letters of Administration. It seems

almost a pity that Mesars. Kine. Wine & Company, who havo

raised a question which has long been waiting for mettle-

ment, have not seen their way to bring the matter hafure

H. M. Supreme Court at Shanghai but warnano tho estate in

too small to justify them in inourring the expense of

altinatione However there is very little doubt that H

Supreme Court would have upheld the action of the Company.

The matter is one of very rest importance as it concerna

companies whose aegrerate aubacrihed capital is probably

for in excess of Tsele 30,0,0,000. As Kenzro. I WI

& Co. very rightly say the point at issue is between the
